hello@footprintapp.coAbout Footprint
What is Footprint?
Footprint is an instrument for mapping the human experience across time.
You build your Footprint by preserving the stories behind what you carry through life—photos, objects, people, places, experiences, messages, recordings, and more—and connecting them to one another.
Over time, those connections create something richer than an archive or timeline: a living map of what has shaped you, what you have shaped in return, and the stories you want to carry with you.
Why does Footprint use a map?
Because a life is more than a timeline.
Chronology can show you what happened first. A map can show you how the parts of your life relate: how a person connects to a place, a place to an experience, an object to a memory, and one chapter of your life to another.
Footprint makes those relationships visible so you can see your life as a connected whole, not a series of isolated moments.
How is Footprint different from photo and memory apps?
Most photo and memory apps are repositories. Footprint lets you preserve the stories behind your images and keepsakes, then connect them to the people, places, and experiences around them.
The result is a living, growing map of your life—one that reveals patterns, relationships, and insights as your Footprint evolves.
What is a footprint?
A footprint represents your connection to something that has become part of your life.
We often think of possessions as things we own. But some of the things we keep—physical or digital—become part of how we understand ourselves. Psychologists sometimes call this the extended self. A footprint gives that connection a place to live.
It may begin with a photograph, possession, person, place, experience, message, recording, or memory. You add the story and context that explain what it means to you.
What can I make a footprint about?
Anything whose story you want to preserve.
That might be a family photograph, a childhood home, a friendship, a handwritten note, a trip, a piece of clothing, a voicemail, a recipe, a book, a concert, an heirloom, or something completely ordinary that carries meaning only you understand.
Meaning does not depend on format or monetary value.
We are also continually expanding Footprint so you can preserve and connect more kinds of experiences, media, and objects over time.
Why do connections matter?
Because deeper meaning often lives between things.
A single footprint can tell a story. Connect it to the people, places, objects, and experiences around it, and a larger story begins to emerge.
As your Footprint grows, those relationships can help you rediscover context, recognize patterns, and understand how different parts of your life have shaped one another.
Is Footprint a social network?
No. Footprint is built around personal reflection, not outward performance.
There is no public feed, follower count, like count, or algorithm competing for your attention. Your Footprint exists for you.
But some stories are meant to be shared. You can gift a footprint to another Footprint user when you want to give them a memory or story that belongs in their life, too.
Is Footprint only about preserving memories for the future?
No. Preservation matters, but Footprint should be useful while you are living your life.
Building your Footprint can help you notice what you value, recover context you might otherwise forget, and see relationships between experiences that once seemed unrelated.
What you preserve may become meaningful to someone else years from now. But knowing yourself more fully today is reason enough to build it.
Using Footprint
Can I add photos and media that are already on my phone?
Yes.
You can use supported media from your device when creating a footprint. The media provides the artifact; Footprint gives you a place to preserve the story and context around it.
You control Footprint's access to your photo library through iOS permissions.
Can I edit a footprint after I create it?
Yes.
Return to a footprint whenever you want to add or update its story and context.
Your Footprint can evolve along with your understanding of your life. If you have featured someone in a footprint, they are seeing the footprint itself rather than a copy of it, so later edits appear for them too.
Privacy, Data & AI
Is my Footprint public?
No.
Sharing memories on social apps may be commonplace, but we believe that your life is not content and therefore not a space for others to browse freely.
You decide when to share something with another person. Features such as gifting a footprint let you share deliberately without turning your life into a public feed.
What happens to the information I add to Footprint?
We use the information you add to store and organize your footprints, create connections, and power features you choose to use.
We do not sell your personal information or build Footprint around advertising.
That choice is fundamental to the product. Your memories, relationships, and attention should serve your Footprint, not an advertising business.
You can read more about how we handle information in our Privacy Policy.
Who owns what I add to Footprint?
You do.
You retain ownership of the photos, videos, recordings, writing, and other original content you add to Footprint.
You give Footprint permission to store and process that material so we can provide the service, as explained in our Terms of Service. Adding something to Footprint does not make it ours.
Can I get a copy of my Footprint data?
Not yet. Footprint does not currently offer self-service data export inside the app.
We believe you should be able to take the information you have added with you. We are building a process that will allow users to request their Footprint data and receive it in a portable format.
For questions about your data today, contact hello@footprintapp.co.
What happens to my data if Footprint shuts down?
If Footprint were ever to shut down, we would want the stories people entrusted to us to remain theirs.
Our goal would be to give users reasonable notice and an opportunity to retrieve their data before the service becomes unavailable whenever circumstances allow.
We are also working toward stronger data-export tools so your Footprint does not depend entirely on the continued existence of our company.
Does Footprint use artificial intelligence?
Yes—but primarily behind the scenes.
Footprint uses AI to help organize information, understand context, and surface meaningful connections between your footprints. It does not generate the photographs, videos, voices, memories, or other media that make up your Footprint.
Membership & Billing
Why isn't Footprint free?
Many consumer apps pay for themselves through advertising, selling or sharing data, or designing experiences that maximize the amount of time and attention people give them. When you are not paying for a product, your attention or data can become part of the business model.
We chose a different path.
A paid Footprint subscription helps us build a business that does not depend on selling your personal information or maximizing your attention. It supports a more private, focused, and sustainable place for information that can become deeply personal.
New users can create footprints for free before deciding whether to subscribe.
How are Footprint subscriptions billed?
Subscriptions purchased in the iPhone app are processed through Apple's App Store.
You will see the price, billing period, and renewal terms before you confirm a purchase.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the menu and tap Subscription, then choose Manage Subscription. That takes you to your Apple Account subscription settings, where you can cancel.
You can also get there directly on your iPhone through Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Footprint.
Canceling stops your subscription from renewing. You will continue to have access to your paid subscription through the end of the period you already purchased.
Deleting the Footprint app from your phone does not cancel an active subscription.
What is Footprint's refund policy?
Refund eligibility may depend on how your subscription was purchased and the circumstances of the request.
If you have a billing issue or would like to request a refund, contact us at hello@footprintapp.co. For purchases processed through Apple's App Store, Apple may require that the refund request be submitted directly to them and will make the final determination where applicable.
Canceling your subscription does not automatically refund a charge that has already been processed.
